Beyond Burnout to Holistic Health

As a leader you’ve perhaps more power for positive outcomes than you know!
Reframing employee health: Moving beyond burnout to holistic health
Its good for people and business £££

A new McKinsey Health Institute survey across 30 countries offers insights into how business’ can help create a workplace that prioritises physical, mental, social, and spiritual health.

The global levels of good holistic health is around 60 percent – however levels significantly vary by country – UK is only 43! – some attention required I feel! As leaders we are all responsible.

For anyone who still thinks ‘holistic health’ is a nice to have check these numbers out:
“Research by MHI and Business in the Community showed that the UK economic value of improved employee well-being could be between £130 billion to £370 billion per year or from 6 to 17 percent of the United Kingdom’s GDP. That’s the equivalent of £4,000 to £12,000 per UK employee.”

“For employees, good holistic health is most strongly predicted by workplace enablers, while burnout is strongly predicted by workplace demands. Providing enablers alone will not mitigate burnout, and addressing demands alone will not improve holistic health. A complementary approach is needed.”

Let’s be really clear when we are talking ‘holistic health’ there is so much that your behaviour as a leader, the environment, the team culture etc contribute to the overall wellbeing of your people. This is not just about nice to have additions, it starts with workplace fundamentals. Take for example the top causes of burnout 1) Toxic workplace behaviour 2) Role ambiguity 3) Role conflict. These and more in the article are in your control, part of your role as a leader and manager.
Take number two – role ambiguity – This is more common that you might imagine even in top class business! Watch your assumptions – check people are clear & remember depending on their profile they might not speak out (We can help you unlock much of this is you need)

This recent McKinsey Health Institute article takes you through the key demands and enablers for both burnout and holistic health.  I recommend as a must read for any responsible leader, manger of people.

To those that pride themselves on really putting people at the heart of your business – if you join the dots – do even more – spread and encourage good practice – you could be adding years to people’s lives, as well as developing the economy.

This from the article really sums it up for me…
“Enabling a healthy workforce is no longer a luxury but rather a strategic imperative for organizations to navigate turbulent times in an ever more complex society. To seize the opportunities presented by employee health and well-being, employers must recognize their role. By agreeing to create workplaces where employees can thrive, organizations can prioritize holistic health as an important outcome that potentially aligns with an organization’s broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) framework.”
